We Care and Friends "School On Water" Environmental and Outdoor Education Camp

About the Project

School On Water is an environmental a outdoor education summer camp in partnership with We Care and Friends located at the Stanton Center in the Clay Street area of downtown Annapolis. This project was implemented to engage underserved youth in actionable science, civic engagement, green career development, and experiential learning by visiting environmental education centers all around the state of Maryland. This program was made possible for youth whose parents were clients of We Care and Friends which is a local nonprofit that services citizens in between housing, and battling drug addiction. The program was offered to the youth for free and provided meals and transportation.

BBE was reached out to in need of program development and implementation of an on-site project director to manage this summer program and write the curriculum. BBE wrote the curriculum and implemented it as well with the team at BBE and We Care and Friends. We Care and Friends is dedicated to supporting the building blocks to create strong families and communities in areas affected by drugs, poverty, and crime in Maryland.

BBE carried out the deliverables of this project by:

  • Providing a safe positive learning environment for 5-70 youth Monday through Friday in the summer at the Stanton Center located at Clay Street in Annapolis, Maryland downtown Art District.
  • Introduced youth to the environmental installations in their community, as well as legacy and history information maps, or statues.
  • Introduced youth to environmental professionals that look like them, and shared their journey as to how they got into STEM/Geosciences/Nature-based careers.
  • Took youth outside of their local area to museums such as the Mint in Washington DC, the Harriet Tubman Museum in Cambridge MD, and the Jug Bay Wetlands Tour in Prince George County.
