Annapolis Gardens Urban Tree Grant Project

About the Project

Thanks to an Urban Tree Planting grant from Chesapeake Bay Trust, written and facilitated by BBE, the Rev. Samuel Green Sr. Foundation in collaboration with residents, management, and community partners, hosted an urban tree planting event that took place Saturday, December 2 at the Annapolis Gardens Community, a subsidized housing community that is still recovering from a tornado that struck their community in 2021, making it an environmental justice community. This event represents efforts to address environmental sustainability problems of this community which includes a recent assessment that indicated 33 of 46 rain gardens installed at Annapolis Gardens failed the inspection. Community residents also raised concerns about large trees covering their windows and the removal of invasive species at 11 sites on the properties.
Breaking Boundaries Environmental LLC (BBE) determined the level of funding needed to implement this project, by looking at factors that influence cost-effectiveness, and identified community support that allowed residents to feel a sense of belonging to the project, which is key. BBE provided the main goals of the Annapolis Gardens Urban Tree Planting project which were to: 1) Provide shade for buildings, parks, or other infrastructure; 2) Beautify, unify, and increase social capital in the community; 3) Replace many fallen trees from the recent Tornado that rippled through the Annapolis Garden neighborhood; 4) Develop socio-equity in this community by providing stipends to residents for assisting with planting and maintaining trees, thus creating an environmental sustainability workforce in a low-income community; and 5) Create environmental sustainability contracting opportunities for minority businesses.
Led by BBE and the Rev. Samuel Green Sr. Foundation, all these goals were achieved. In addition to planting 61 trees, the Foundation also received funding from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, to remove invasive species from 5 of the 11 areas where this problem existed. A local grassroots organization will provide Tree Trooper training to maintain the trees over 2 years.
