At Breaking Boundaries Environmental LLC, our vision is to create a world where environmental sustainability, social justice, and economic viability are at the forefront of all decision-making. We strive to break boundaries and push the limits of what is possible by offering innovative solutions that promote sustainable development and reduce the impact of human activities on the environment. Our commitment to enhancing or restoring natural landscapes is rooted in our belief that the health of the environment is essential for the well-being of all living beings. We aspire to become a leading force in sustainable development and environmental conservation by providing high-quality services that are tailored to the unique needs of our clients. Our vision is to inspire and empower individuals, organizations, and communities to take action on environmental challenges and create a brighter future for generations to come.

Our History

BBE was formed in 2022 and was created as a result of the Maryland Conservation Act of 2022. This act makes Maryland the first state to officially define blue infrastructure, and create a broader understanding of green infrastructure, making more initiatives eligible for funding.

Since its start just a year ago, BBE has been successful in implementing green infrastructure projects of large-scale tree plantings throughout Maryland from the Watershed Stewards Academy’s Replant Anne Arundel program, Chesapeake Bay Trust’s Urban Tree Grant program, and more.

Developing relationships with the community by creating job opportunities through its green infrastructure projects and providing services for Maryland Reentry programs is also on the agenda for 2024. BBE is invested in promoting solutions to environmental concerns using these blue and green infrastructure techniques. BBE is based out of Annapolis Maryland and works statewide, as well as internationally in global sustainability projects. BBE represents the spectrum of small construction and sustainable retrofitting, research management, and policy; this allows BBE to explore multiple dimensions of actionable restoration and capacity building. BBE is unique because it intends to create not just a collection of contracts and implementation of projects, and opportunities, but a coherent and intentional experience arc that is tailored to underserved community needs. Also, BBE uses a recognized set of best practices and competencies around global sustainability to guide the implementation experiences, assessment, and mentoring of other diverse contractors during the arc of their involvement. This is unique because BBE’s multi-dimensional network of the Chesapeake Bay restoration effort includes environmental planners and researchers across a variety of institutional settings (academic, agency, and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), municipal officials, citizens, managers, and policymakers working to develop and apply scientific understanding toward an established large, visible, and complex environmental challenge. The use of these best practices helps stakeholders understand how green and blue infrastructure development experiences can then begin to resonate with themselves and those around them. Presently, Breaking Boundaries Environmental is a Member of the Maryland Department of Environment’s Blue and Green Infrastructure Legislation and Policy Commission. Kenyatta Rowel also serves on the Wes Moore administration’s Interstate Potomac River Basin Commission.

Future Evolution of BBE Hopes and Dreams

The future of BBE will be a continuation of building relationships and capacity building. As an existing firm, BBE has already demonstrated the ability to network within the industry, and perform successful implementation of green and blue projects in and around environmental justice communities, as well as reaching out to new partners through networking and proposal writing, etc. Our hope is for future expansion of BBE and continuing to seed communities of color with more diverse new professionals that will ultimately lead to a more diverse science and management community, which will be critical if we want to successfully achieve our green and blue restoration and management goals.

Each specific element of projects supports entry into the pipeline and the retention of resources within it. This is what keeps BBE going! Bridging the disparity gap! BBE is moving forward to improve the environment, meet the needs of future generations, and help us ensure that there is representative, diverse, inclusive, and equitable action and outcomes.
