rivers and trails Project

About the Project

Breaking Boundaries Environment (BBE), in partnership with the community, public, and private sectors, is designing a trail system located adjacent to the Naval Academy Golf Course on the Broadneck Peninsula in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County. BBE is involving multiple partners and hosting events in order to build interest in the cause. A vital part of the Broadneck peninsula, the rivers and trails along Mill Creek directly link the descendant communities of Mulberry Hill, Browns Woods, and Clay Hill, while also serving as an indirect connection to Skidmore, Midtown, Shot Town, and Shellyville.

This isn’t just a trail; it’s a living pathway that celebrates history, culture, and nature. The Mulberry Hill-Browns Woods Trail Restoration Project will be a bridge to a shared future and past, where everyone can benefit—a place where history is honored, nature is protected, and community bonds are strengthened. Join us on this journey. Explore the map, learn about our progress, and find out how you can be a part of Breaking Boundaries Environmental.

Vision

A trail network of rivers and trails along Mill Creek that directly link the descendant communities of Mulberry Hill, Browns Woods, and Clay Hill, while also serving as an indirect connection to Skidmore, Midtown, Shot Town, and Shellyville. – that showcases the culture, local history, ecological systems, and promotes environmental health and interculturalism as a bridge to a shared future where everyone thrives.

Mission

Mulberry Hill Trails will increase access to the outdoors for people of color by working with partners to reconnect, design, and build an accessible trail system in the forests of the Broadneck peninsula connecting four descendent communities. The development of interpretive signs, and interactive trail features along with community programming will increase environmental literacy and help preserve historic places. In every step of our work we will center the needs, desires, and direction of the communities. Through stakeholder engagement, intergenerational learning, and youth empowerment, we aim to provide easy access to nature and historical sites while preserving wildlife habitats, honoring indigenous lifeways, and promoting resilience in our community, environment, and beyond.

How You Can Get Involved

To learn how you can get involved, email Kenyatta Rowel (CEO, BBE) breakingboundariesenv@gmail.com or Randy Rowel (President of Mulberry Hill Neighborhood Association) at rrandassociates07@gmail.com.

The 2025 Mulberry Hill Trails Community Profile offers an overview of the current conditions and recent historic trends within a community and its surrounding area. It helps set the stage for evaluating potential impacts and guiding project decisions. More specifically, the profile provides information about socioeconomic conditions, demographics about the community, health, weather impacts on recreation, residential conditions, parks and public transportation in the community and the US Naval Golf Course.

Grasping the context and key characteristics of a community is essential for fostering effective engagement and ensuring the success of outdoor recreation and conservation initiatives. For the Mulberry Hill community we are looking at how select characteristics have changed in a 10-year period from 2010 to 2020, looking at current statistics, and looking into the future for how the county plans to use and change the area.
